Description:

Akhmim city is a historical city located in Sohag governorate (south of Egypt). Since Pharaohs days, it has been known for its superiority of textile weaving products using shuttle looms techniques. Akhmim’s textile is well known for its creative weaving techniques using loom. The weavers of Akhmim are still producing many different traditional Egyptian products by hand. They use big wooden looms that have up to 4 people operate together!

Women produce scarfs, shawls, towels, bed covers, bed sheets, blankets, tablecloth and table runners using cotton, linen, silk and wool as raw materials. Egyptian cotton of Akhmim is well known for its high quality and weaving delicacy.

The town of Akhmim has maintained a long and proud tradition of experienced textile weaving. You can trace its first products back to the Pharaohs who used to rule the ancient civilization of Thebes. Unfortunately, the weavers have been hard-hit in recent decades as the proliferation of machines and their mass-production capabilities made it nearly impossible for these artisans to compete in the textile market. Thus, the main goal of us is to protect the area's traditional hand-weaving methods, while guaranteeing the community a steady income-generating source.
